Minimalist lo-fi duo the Dyne will make their Shanghai debut on Sat, Apr 20 at Uptown Records at a showcase that doubles as both a RSD bash and the official release party for their new seven-inch on Genjing Records, Swim. Fly Roots.

BEIJING: FILM SCREENING AND PARTY AT XP

Genjing and Wooozy are throwing a party in the capital city with a screening of this year’s official Record Store Day film Last Shop Standing alongside performances by the newly-minted Genjing outfit Streets Kill Strange Animals, experimental American transplants Alpine Decline and Lilisay, the cool new trip hop side project from post-punk duo IDH’s Xiao Yu. Attendees can also look forward to drink specials (cheap and strong), contests (free stuff), vinyl giveaways and merchandise distribution from other creative folks, including local retailers, record shops and creative firms.

Known to most of the world for the Orioles, The Wire and/or blue crabs, ever since the mid-2000s Baltimore has nurtured a lively independent music scene anchored by the likes of Animal Collective and Beach House. Enter into the mix Andy Stack and Jenn Wasner, otherwise known as Wye Oak. Stack drums and plays keys, Wasner takes on vocal and guitar duties. Inevitable comparisons to Victoria Legrand aside, the duo play a highly appealing, infectious and mesmerizing brand of “21^st century folk” with dream-pop and shoegaze influences. A much more apt comparison for Wye Oak would be the alternating boy-girl vocals and penetrating riffs associated with Yo La Tengo.

After recording and mixing their first two records themselves, Stack and Wasner along with their record label, Merge, enlisted the skills of mixing engineer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Shearwater) to imbue 2011’s Civilian with the sound of shoegaze guitars, nearly-melodic rhythms and impeccable splashes of electronic color. Released to near-universal acclaim, fans of TV’s The Walking Dead will also recognize the title track from its use in the series’ second season finale. The first band under storied label Merge Records’ stable to play in China, Split Works is delighted to welcome Wye Oak for their first shows here!

Hailing from the spastic pop-cum-sludge garage rock haven of San Francisco, The Dodos specialize in a softer sort of experimental pop than say, their wilder compatriots Thee Oh Sees or Sic Alps. Comprised of Meric Long on guitar and Logan Kroeber on drums and percussion, the duo subvert audience expectations by Kroeber taking the lead on many of their songs whilst Long accompanies him in creating music where drumming could be a center role and help bring out the syncopated rhythms coming out of the acoustic guitar. In Dodos recordings, the drums hit you in the chest first, before the guitar jangles in, enhancing the driving beats. As The Dodos, Kroeber and Long boast a lush sound that belies their duo status, with songs such as “When Will You Go” and “Hunting Season” reminiscent of Fleet Foxes or Akron/Family.

Their 2011 album No Color, which featured backing vocals from Neko Case, a third member playing the vibraphone, and Long on electric guitar, charts a new yet not unfamiliar direction for The Dodos as they embark on bolder soundscapes while preserving the unique instrumentation and composition that have been their calling card from the very beginning. This summer, join Split Works in welcoming The Dodos to China.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, L.A. dance duo Nguzunguzu will unfortunately not be performing at JUE | Music + Art this year. However, Split Works is more than excited to announce that this electronic absence will be filled by the Philippines’ own Idris Vicuña, otherwise known as Eyedress.

Eyedress is the solo project of Idris Vicuña, lead guitarist of Filipino lo-fi garage pop outfit, Bee Eyes. A mix of slow beats, sauntering synths, and washed out vocals, Eyedress’s songs are inspired by new wave, Super Nintendo, mistrust, loss, and psychedelic drugs.

Eyedress’s 2012 release Half Japanese is the kind of album that creates instant fans out of its listeners. Infectiously melancholy, from the catchy chillwave-y “Mountbatten” to moody, combative “Tokyo Ghost” each track on the debut EP demonstrates his ability to use ultra-chill beats and slurry, drowned out vocals to craft a dark, retro-futurist take on contemporary synth pop. For over 5 years now, Eyedress has made a major impact over independent music coming out of the Philippines. With his combination of glossy and shimmering synth grooves across a heavy bass laden landscape tied together with flawlessly arranged vocals, Eyedress runs the gauntlet when it comes to variations of musical style.

His new record “Hearing Colors” was released on Phantasma Disques in France, with a worldwide release expected in May 2013. We are thrilled to have him bring his unique approach to electronic to JUE | Music + Art.

Over the last decade, the cities of Beijing and Shanghai have become regular fixtures on the international live touring circuit.  Venues and promoters have blossomed and weekends are full of activity with both international and local bands filling live houses and clubs across the two cities.

The further you go from these Eastern Seaboard megalopolises, the easier it is to see that China is anything but a stereotyped, unified, country housing ¼ of the world’s population.  Beyond the ten biggest cities (and there are some very big urban sprawls indeed in that list), you struggle to find a single venue dedicated to live music or art.  There are cities with populations of tens of millions that have never seen an international band play, ever.

Since 2008, we at Split Works have been striving to change this, taking bands in ever increasing circles to cities like Wuhan, Chengdu and Xi’an, but there was always a sense of frustration that we couldn’t go further, that we couldn’t take bands to the outer reaches of China, to the snow and ice locked North on the border with Russia, to the far West, where Muslim minorities live in oasis towns in the middle of the desert, along the road less traveled, spreading music’s good word.

And so it was, when the British Council mooted the idea of doing something with Britain’s best independent bands as a centerpiece of their “Year in China” UK Now festival, we jumped at the chance to go as far and as wide as humanly possible

The concept was simple – take a band from each of the home nations and drop them in on a Chinese tour in a geographical environment that might remind them in some small way of home and see what transpires.

And so it was that Gallops, a band from a post industrial town in Wales travels along the banks of the Yangtze, playing some of the most industrial cities on the planet, And So I Watch You From Afar, a band from the Emerald Isle headed to Yunnan, China’s greenest and most verdant province, while later in 2012 Jamie Woon flew North to the great ice city of Harbin, while indie collective label Fence journeyed from their spiritual home in Fife to the deserts of Xinjiang.

“From Wuhan to Wrexham” follows these epic journeys, chronicling the ups and downs, the great moments and the difficult ones.  Mostly though, this film showcases through the eyes of the musicians the incredible diversity that exists within China’s borders.  You will never think the same about China again.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor (GY!BE) began with Efrim Menuck, Mauro Pezzente and Mike Moya in the early 90s, playing a handful of shows and recording a self-released cassette as a trio before deciding to transform the group into a large band. Recruiting numerous Montreal musicians through 1995-1996, GY!BE mounted sense-rattling wall-of-sound performances, featuring as many as 14 musicians and several 16mm film projectors, before recording their debut, limited-edition, vinyl-only album F# A# ∞ on Constellation Records in 1997.

With a lineup that solidified at the end of the last millennium and through tireless touring and extravagant releases, the lush, builds-to-crescendo sounds and anarcho-political bent of Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s members seemed uniquely suited to the uncertainty plaguing the turn of the latest century. On early releases F# A# ∞ and Slow Rise for New Zero Kanada the band marry elements of instrumental rock ‘n roll with avant-classical compositional techniques and baroque flourishes, producing minimalist yet Ennio Morricione-esque metal-inflected suites complete with found-sound samples and intricately edited film loops during their live shows. GY!BE’s last record before going on hiatus was Yanqui U.X.O. (the letters stand for unexploded ordnance-landmines), both their most overtly political, and most melodic, eschewing the vocal samples prevalent in previous recordings for melodies that can barely be contained by the boundaries of the album.

After nearly ten years apart, GY!BE announced they would re-form to curate and play at All Tomorrow’s Parties’ Nightmare Before Christmas fiestval in December 2010; touring resumed at the band’s former blistering pace throughout the next year. In October of 2012, the band released Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!, their first album since 2002. Critically acclaimed, it landed on year-end best-of lists from London to Los Angeles and was praised for its ability to “find magnificence in destruction and build an aesthetic out of decay and loss” (Pitchfork, Best New Music), “[full of] weight, heft and visceral impact” (Drowned in Sound), and “all heart-bursting beauty” (Stereogum). This spring, Split Works is honored to welcome post-rock titans Godspeed You! Black Emperor for their first shows in China.
